Tweed is a coarse, thick and rough surfaced wool fabric. It is
mid-to-heavyweight with plaid, checked, striped, and other patterns. The
weave of tweed is twill, novelty, variations, or plain. There are many
varieties of tweed. Some are very closely woven with smoother and softer
yarns. Few are of monotone. The word 'Tweed' is the Scotch name for twill. It originated along the banks of the Tweed river, which separates England from Scotland. Tweed is sometimes also known as 'Tweel'. Eventually, tweed was used for all carded homespun wool like Scotch tweed, Irish tweed, Donegal tweed, Cheviot tweed or Harris tweed.
