What is Satin?
First of all, Satin is not to be confused with
Sateen. Satin is a weave having a glossy
surface and high luster. Satin is one of the most luxurious fabrics, made of
silk initially. Originally, during the middle ages, satin was made of silk
from China. Satin was then exported to Italy in the 12th century. By the
14th century, garments made of satin were greatly liked by Europeans because
of their high gloss and sheen and they were often the choice of royalty.
Since the satin made from silk was expensive, other materials like
polyester, acetate, nylon, and rayon were used to make Satin. These fabrics
provide a less expensive but a glossy finish satin. Silk satin is the
premiere choice of fiber content for bridal satin fabrics.
About Satin Weave
Satin Fabric
The reason why a satin-woven fabric has a high
luster and gloss is because of the high number of floats on the fabric.
There are three basic types of weaving by which the most of the woven
products are formed. They are Satin weaves, twill weaves, and plain weaves.
In the satin weave, some weft or weave yarns are brought to the surface in a
process which is referred as floating. In this process, some of the yarn is
allowed to reflect light, which produce the gloss and shine. Though
originally satin has one glossy side and a dull side, it is possible to get
this effect on both sides of a garment. This is called double-faced satin.
This is softer than skin, but will cost more, if made with silk.

Types of Satin
- Crepeback Satin: Here, crepe yarns are used in the filling
direction of the fabric. This is the horizontal direction and the smooth
low-twisted filament yarns are used in the warp.
- Antique Satin: This type of satin is produced using slub
yarns in the filling direction.
- Duchesse Satin: Duchess satin is mainly used in dress
fabrics, and is a popular choice for wedding dresses. It is a fairly
stiff satin, glossy on one side only and is of heavy weight.
- Slipper Satin: A heavy stiff satin used mainly for footwear.
- Satin Jacquard or faconne: Here patterns are woven through
it. These could be paisley, stripes, or any design. Satin jacquard comes
in a variety of weights and qualities but a more flexible fabric than
duchess satin.
- Delustered satin: This is also known as skin of silk ( peau
de soie ). It is lightweight material and less silky. It has a dull
luster, but finished on both sides, making it double-faced.
