Mink is a fur. It is a symbol of luxury and status. It gives an extreme
comfort and warmth. Mink coats and outer apparel are highly valued
because of their thick and lustrous fur. It drapes well in many flowing
directions.Usually good quality fur is obtained from smaller animals, hence garments from smaller skins are made by skin-on-skin method, which joins the trimmed skin lengthwise to other skins. This method leaves a visible mark at joints. Mink skin is about 6 inches wide and 16 inches long. The skin is cut into diagonal slices on the skin side in widths ranging from 0.5 inch to 0.06 inch. These are realigned and stitched to produce an elongated peltry. Thousands of such seams in a garment compacts the fur and make it rich and fluffy.
Mink leather is obtained from Mink, a semi-aquatic weasels belonging to the genus Mustela. This is one of the two species belonging to genus and is native to North America. Mink farming originated in the US, but the world's major mink suppliers are Denmark, Finland, Oslo and Norway.
