Leather tanned with oil or fat is known as chamois leather. It is soft
and supple and characterises by the ability of absorbing water at least
three times of its weight. This quality has made it a good use as
cycling shorts. It is also widely used as automobile washing and auto
detailing known as "shammy" cloth, a leather pads.Chamois leather was originally made from the skins of the Alpine antelopes which were known as chamois. The leather was then tanned with oils or fats. Earlier it was called as oiled Nu-Buk. Today, chamois leather is mostly made from wild animals such as red deer or ore-deer or then with sheep and goatskins. It is yellowish and very supple.
