Chamois Leather Leather tanned with oil or fat is known as chamois leather. It is soft and supple and characterises by the ability of absorbing water at least three times of its weight. This quality has made it a good use as cycling shorts. It is also widely used as automobile washing and auto detailing known as "shammy" cloth, a leather pads.

Chamois leather was originally made from the skins of the Alpine antelopes which were known as chamois. The leather was then tanned with oils or fats. Earlier it was called as oiled Nu-Buk. Today, chamois leather is mostly made from wild animals such as red deer or ore-deer or then with sheep and goatskins. It is yellowish and very supple.

Chamois leather is very popular among professional film and video camera viewfinders. It provides extra comfort and absorbs sweat for these operators who spend longer hours outdoor with their eye planted on the viewfinder.
